Hello, fellow dragon trainers! 👋. Look, now. I must admit that I have been playing Dragons: Rise of Berk for an embarrassingly long time before I begin this post. By now, we're talking about years. My nephew wanted to watch me play it at a family barbecue, which is why I downloaded it in the first place. Somehow, I'm still here, logging in every day and collecting dragons like a digital Viking hoarder. And if you're reading this, you probably already know the one thing that separates casual players from people who are actually progressing in this game:. Running. Those gorgeous, priceless, incredibly difficult-to-stockpile tiny purple gems. They are essentially the game's premium currency, and it really wants you to spend real money on them. Here's the thing, though: you are under no obligation to. Even though Rise of Berk has been free-to-play for the majority of my time (okay, I gave in and bought a small pack ONCE during a holiday sale, don't judge me), I've still been able to unlock some pretty amazing dragons and greatly accelerate my progress. So, without breaking the bank, grab a cup of coffee (or mead, if you're being true to your character) and allow me to share everything I've learned about farming Runes.

The mainstay of Toothless is its exploration missions. This is the most dependable way to get free Runes in the game, so if you're not sending Toothless out on search missions on a regular basis, what are you even doing? I mean this with love. There's a possibility that Toothless will return with Runes each time he goes exploring. Yes, but not every time. He occasionally returns with wood or fish, which is a little disappointing. Chef's kiss, though, when that purple sparkle appears. Toothless should always be occupied, in my opinion. Send him out again as soon as he returns from a journey. For this, I have small reminders set on my phone. Yes, that is who I am. "Is that your dragon alarm again?" my girlfriend asked when she noticed my phone buzzing, and I had no way of responding. Over time, there will be more opportunities at Runes because the shorter search missions cycle more quickly. However, longer missions can occasionally result in larger payouts. For my part, I prefer to alternate between shorter ones during the day when I can check in and longer ones right before bed.

Make sure you finish those collections; don't put this off. This is one that I believe many players ignore, and to be honest, I did for a very long time. There are collections in the Book of Dragons, and you receive a prize when you finish all of the dragons in a collection. And you know what that prize is frequently? Babe, run. A good portion of them are also included in some collections. In order to determine which dragon to pursue next, look at the Book of Dragons and determine which collection you are closest to finishing. It's far more strategic than simply seizing the dragon that most appeals to you. (But let's face it, I bought the Deadly Nadder versions early on just because they looked sick. Not one regret. I). #3. Watch the advertisements. I know, I know, but listen to me. puts on a helmet to protect oneself from incoming moans. Yes, I do advise you to watch advertisements. I do know. Ads are disliked by all. However, in comparison to many mobile games, Rise of Berk's ad-for-Runes system is actually fairly generous. When you watch a brief video, you'll see those tiny icons appear, usually Johann's trading offers or sporadic pop-ups, that will award you a Rune or two (sometimes more!). They are each about 15 to 30 seconds. That is all. Usually, I do this while working on another task. Sitting in a waiting room, watching TV, or waiting for my pasta water to boil—just tap, let the advertisement run, and get my Rune. You'd be surprised at how quickly it adds. I estimated that I was earning about 15 to 20 extra Runes per week just from advertisements after doing some rough tracking once (because apparently I have no chill). That's really significant—more than a month. No, it's not glamorous. Does it work? Definitely.

Log in to each. Not married. Day. Runes appear in the Rise of Berk daily login rewards cycle rather frequently. You reset your streak or lose out on the good things if you miss a day. This is what I discovered the hard way. I once went camping without a cell signal for three days, and when I returned, my streak was totally gone. When I opened the app in the car on the way home, I believe I actually said "nooo" aloud. My friend who was driving believed that there was a serious problem. Not at all. Only dragon game issues. In summary, simply open the app and get your daily reward even if you don't have much time to play. Ten seconds pass.

The Big Runes Are Found in Seasonal and Special Events. Keep an eye out for seasonal events, Gauntlet events, and anything Ludia throws at you for a brief period of time. Runes are frequently integrated into the reward tiers of these, and they can occasionally be surprisingly abundant. The secret is to genuinely commit to the event while it is underway. I used to wonder why I never made it to the higher reward tiers and kind of half-participate. I then made the decision to really go all out at one Snoggletog event, setting timers, organizing my searches, and everything else. During that two-week period, I earned more Runes than I had during the preceding two months of casual play. The game essentially says, "Hey, here's a bunch of free stuff if you just show up and put in the work," during events. Accept the offer!

Boost Your Dragons' Strategic Level. This is more of a long-game tip, but you can eventually access better missions and resources by growing Berk and leveling up your dragons. Better Rune payouts can be found in some of the later game content. Focusing on important dragons and leveling them up opens doors, even though I know it's tempting to distribute your resources thin across a million dragons (guilty 🙋). In actuality. Improved search missions, improved performance at events, improved everything. Seven. Avoid spending runes on the spur of the moment (learn from my mistakes). Now let's tell a story. At the beginning of my Rise of Berk career, I had about 150 Runes saved. I was really pleased with myself. Then I saw the dragon I wanted in the store—I can't even recall which one it was—and I used speed-up timers to blow almost all of them in one go in order to get it. Was it worthwhile? Not at all. I was broke for weeks while that dragon did nothing particularly noteworthy while sitting on Berk. My new rule is to never use Runes to speed things up. Simply. Do not. Wait patiently. You will be extremely thankful to still have those Runes in the future, even though the timer says 16 hours, which seems like an eternity. Save them for things that really count, like unlocking important expansions or obtaining exclusive dragons that you can't get any other way. For everything else, simply let the timer run. Take a look at some grass. When you return, your dragons will still be there.

Watch the Rune Rewards from Berk's Structures. On Berk, certain structures and ornaments occasionally produce Runes. Even though the amounts are tiny, they add up. Tap all of them. Gather all the things. Become that compulsive Viking who explores every part of their island. It has become a small ritual for me. Open Rise of Berk, have coffee in the morning, and thoroughly sweep Berk while gathering resources. It's weirdly meditative, honestly. Better than doomscrolling Twitter.

Participate in Communities and Remain Current. This one's less of an in-game tip and more of a meta tip, but — join the Rise of Berk communities on Reddit, Facebook, Discord, wherever. Players share info about hidden Rune opportunities, event strategies, and sometimes even codes or promotions that Ludia runs. I found out about a promotional Rune giveaway from a Reddit post once that I would have COMPLETELY missed otherwise. The community is surprisingly wholesome and genuinely helpful. We're all just nerds who love our cartoon dragons, and there's something beautiful about that.

Getting Runes in Rise of Berk without spending money is totally doable — it just takes consistency and a little patience. Think of it like tending a garden. (A garden full of fire-breathing reptiles, but still. ) You're not going to wake up tomorrow with 500 Runes. But if you keep at it — send Toothless out, watch the occasional ad, hit your daily logins, go hard on events — you'll be surprised how quickly they accumulate. And honestly? The slow grind is kind of what makes the game fun. When you finally save up enough to grab that dragon you've been eyeing for weeks, it hits DIFFERENT.
