Va viatjar per tota la Mediterrània i per mitja Europa. Però aquesta activitat incessant no li impedí d´escriure més de 250 obres sobre una gran quantitat de temes: política, ciència, medicina, retòrica, lògica, filosofia, teologia, dret, etc. El Llibre de les bèsties constitueix una sàtira sobre la lluita pel poder, una crítica de la societat del final del segle XIII representada al·legòricament pel món dels animals. La corrupció, els abusos de poder i les injustícies no hi falten. Unes constants temàtiques que encara són ben presents en els temps que ens ha tocat viure.
