Overview

This is a fictional story based on actual events just prior to and during World War II. My parents lived through that era in their early 20's, and like Jack & Rose in the film Titanic, they fell in love just before world events came crashing into their lives. My father enlisted in the army prior to Pearl Harbor and remained in the army until the end of the war in 1945. He accompanied the 6th Engineers unit as an MP during the Normandy D-Day invasion. He married my mother during this time and she gave birth to my older sister while he served in the army. My mother kept her baby and managed to work in a factory to earn money and support the war effort. Despite the struggles of growing up during the Great Depression and then falling in love during a world war, they managed to keep their relationship going - through long periods and many miles of separation. Their situations led them to leave their families and find surrogate parents on two different continents. My father wrote many letters to my mother during his five-year army service. Many years later, my sister, Jane, spent an exhaustive time in compiling some of those letters in her published work - There'll Come a Day. It is on the shoulders of my father, my mother, and my sister, that I bring this novel. Besides being historical fiction, I believe this story to be relevant today. Many Americans serve in the armed forces and many others serve their local communities in uniform. This service requires long periods away from their families - hours, days or even months.
