En 1842, des Alsaciens ont fui une vie de misère afin de créer une colonie au Texas. Partis sur des voiliers du Havre et d'Anvers, ils ont débarqué à Galveston avant d'entreprendre un voyage périlleux en chariot pour s'installer enfin sur leurs terres. Ces pionniers ont bâti un village, Castroville, tout en luttant contre les Indiens dont ils ignoraient jusqu'alors l'existence... Parmi ces exilés se trouvent des Normands, Gaétan et sa jumelle Joséphine.
Ils vont connaître des destins radicalement différents : alors que Joséphine est enlevée par une tribu comanche, son frère fonde une famille avec Clara, une Alsacienne, et voit son ranch prospérer. Mais, des années plus tard, son passé trouble le rattrape lorsque arrive au Texas un mystérieux Normand... Sur plus d'un demi-siècle et deux générations, l'épopée méconnue des pionniers français du Texas.
