Hey there, fellow survivors!
So... deep breath... let me tell you about my relationship with Lost Prison Shelter Survival and gems. It's been a journey. A weird, frustrating, occasionally rage-inducing journey that somehow ended with me becoming That Person who knows way too much about virtual currency in a prison survival game.
Look, I'm not proud of the fact that I spent forty-five minutes last Tuesday explaining gem farming strategies to my cat, but here we are. And since Mr. Whiskers wasn't particularly helpful (shocking, I know), I figured I'd write this guide for actual humans who might appreciate it more.
First off, if you're brand new to the game – welcome to your new obsession! Gems are basically the premium currency that makes everything SO much easier. Need to speed up that shelter upgrade? Gems. Want that legendary weapon that makes you feel like an actual badass instead of someone hiding in a corner eating stale bread? You guessed it – gems.
I learned this the hard way during Week One when I tried to play completely free. Spoiler alert: I died. A lot. Like, an embarrassing amount. My survivor had the life expectancy of a mayfly.
Okay, this one's almost too obvious, but you'd be SURPRISED how many people forget. Just... open the game every day. Literally that's it. Day 7 usually gives you a decent gem chunk, and the monthly rewards can be pretty sweet.
I have an alarm on my phone now. It's labeled "Get Your Shiny Rocks" and goes off at 7 PM. My partner thinks I've lost it. They're probably right.
I used to skip these because they seemed tedious (collect 50 wood, craft 3 items, blah blah), but OH BOY was I wrong. Each mission gives you like 5-15 gems, and if you complete all of them? Bonus gems on top.
Pro tip that took me way too long to figure out: You can stack missions! Like, if one says "collect resources" and another says "enter the mine 3 times," do them together. I felt like a GENIUS when I realized this. My efficiency went through the roof, and by "through the roof" I mean I stopped wasting two hours doing things in the worst possible order.
raises hand sheepishly
Yeah, I'm one of those people who needs to unlock everything. The achievements in this game are actually pretty rewarding though! Some give you 50-100 gems just for doing stuff you'd probably do anyway – survive X days, craft X items, defeat X enemies.
There's this one achievement called "Cockroach" for dying 10 times that gave me 20 gems. So like... at least my suffering was compensated? Silver linings, people.
Look. I get it. Ads are annoying. They're the thing we all instinctively skip or hate. HOWEVER – and this is a big however – the ads in this game give you 5 gems each, and you can watch up to 10 per day.
That's 50 gems for like 5 minutes of your time. I watch them while brushing my teeth, making coffee, waiting for my actual real-life food to microwave... basically any time I'm doing something else anyway.
Last week I watched one while on a Zoom call with my camera off. Do I recommend this? No. Did it work? Absolutely.
The weekly events in this game are honestly where it's AT. They usually run Friday through Sunday and if you participate actively, you can rack up 200-500 gems easily.
My favorite was the "Riot Rumble" event two weeks ago. I may have cancelled brunch plans to participate. My friends may still be mad. But I got 347 gems and a legendary bat, so who's the real winner here? (It's me. I'm coping.)
Okay, so there are these special mine levels that reset daily, and sometimes you'll find gem nodes. They look like sparkly purple rocks (honestly, everything important in this game is purple, have you noticed that?).
You need a pickaxe, which you can craft with basic materials. I didn't know this for like 10 days and just walked past so many gems. SO MANY. I calculated how many I missed and genuinely felt physical pain.
I held out for two weeks before buying anything because I was determined to be Free-to-Play Forever™. Then I saw the starter pack – $4.99 for 1,200 gems plus some other goodies.
Reader, I cracked. And honestly? Worth every penny. That's like the cost of a fancy coffee, except this lasts way longer and doesn't make me jittery. Well, the game makes me jittery, but for different reasons.
I haven't personally bought this yet because I'm still pretending I have self-control, but my buddy Jake swears by it. It's like $9.99 and gives you 300 gems immediately, plus 100 gems every day for 30 days.
That's 3,300 gems total for ten bucks. The math actually... kind of makes sense? Jake explained it to me using a whiteboard. We're very serious about our prison survival games, apparently.
Sometimes you get chests from battles, exploration, or events. SAVE THESE. Don't be like me on Day 3, opening everything immediately like some kind of loot-crazed gremlin.
Apparently (and I learned this from a YouTube video at 2 AM, as one does), certain chests have higher gem drop rates during specific events. I don't know if this is confirmed or conspiracy theory territory, but I'm playing it safe now.
Once you unlock the trading post (around day 15-ish?), you can sometimes trade resources for gems. The exchange rate isn't GREAT, but if you're swimming in extra wood and metal, why not?
I once accidentally traded away all my food for 30 gems and nearly starved. Learn from my mistakes. Always keep some food. Survival tip AND life tip, honestly.
Don't spend gems on speeding up early-game stuff. I wasted like 200 gems speeding up a 10-minute craft. TEN MINUTES. I could've just... waited. But I have the patience of a caffeinated squirrel, apparently.
Don't buy random loot boxes. I know they're tempting! They sparkle! They make promising sounds! But the drop rates are ROUGH. I spent 500 gems once and got a bunch of common items I could've crafted myself. I'm still emotionally recovering.
Don't ignore the guild system. Join a guild ASAP. Some guild activities reward gems, plus you get access to the guild shop which sometimes has gem deals. Also, it's nice to have people to complain with when the game does that thing where it crashes right before you finish a mission. Solidarity, people.
Since people always ask me (okay, one person asked me once, but I'm extrapolating), here's what I actually do daily:
Morning: Log in while drinking coffee, collect daily reward (2 minutes)
During breaks: Watch a few ads, do quick daily missions (15 minutes total)
Evening: Actually play the game, explore mines, participate in events if they're running (30-60 minutes)
Before bed: Check if there are any last-minute opportunities I missed (5 minutes)
This gets me roughly 100-150 gems per day without spending money. Some days more if there's an event. Am I optimizing my life for a mobile game? Perhaps. But my shelter is THRIVING, so.
Here's the thing about Lost Prison Shelter Survival – you can absolutely enjoy it without spending a dime. I did for two weeks! It just requires patience and strategic playing.
But also, if you've got a few bucks and you're enjoying the game, the starter pack or monthly card aren't bad investments. We spend money on entertainment all the time – movies, books, that impulse buy candy bar at checkout. If this game brings you joy (and stress, and occasional rage, but mostly joy), supporting the devs isn't the worst thing.
That said, PLEASE don't fall into the trap of spending more than you can afford. It's just a game. A very fun, occasionally addictive game that I think about way too much, but still. Budget responsibly, friends.
I currently have 2,847 gems saved up because I'm paranoid about spending them on the wrong thing. My partner says I treat them like a dragon treats treasure. This is... probably accurate.
The truth is, the best way to get gems is just to play consistently and have fun with it. Do your dailies, participate in events, watch some ads while doing other stuff, and the gems will accumulate. It's not instant gratification, but it works.
And hey, if you see someone in the game with the username "GemGoblin847," say hi. It's probably me, still hoarding gems and overthinking every purchase.
Happy surviving, everyone! May your shelters be fortified and your gem stash ever-growing!
Now if you'll excuse me, I have some dailies to complete and a cat to continue boring with game statistics.
