Rétro-chaos est le récit de vie de Daniel Cordier qui serait demeuré s'il n'avait pas eu le temps de publier Alias Caracalla. Au début des années 2000, il subit une lourde opération. Il profite de sa convalescence pour dresser un bilan. C'est toute son existence qu'il retrace alors, depuis son enfance entre parents divorcés et "séquestration" en pension jusqu'à l'écriture d'Alias Caracalla. Mêlant avec sa spontanéité habituelle anecdotes inédites et réflexions rétrospectives, il raconte la genèse de son engagement à l'extrême droite et la façon dont il s'en déprit sous l'influence de la France libre et de la Résistance.
Il évoque non seulement Jean Moulin, son patron vénéré, mais également la très jeune équipe du secrétariat clandestin aux prises avec le dénuement et la peur. Il revient sur ses rapports compliqués avec son autre "grand homme", Jean Dubuffet, au temps où il était un acteur majeur du marché de l'art contemporain. Il explique enfin, de manière détaillée et concrète, comment il se fit historien au fil de sa monumentale biographie de Jean Moulin et comment il reprit possession de son passé en travaillant à Alias Caracalla.
