What is a YouTube Stream Key?

The Stream Key is an encrypted and random string of numbers and letters directly linked to your YouTube account. It is used to identify you and enable the corresponding encoder, i.e. the streaming programme to forward the signal from your computer directly to YouTube. So you do not have to log in with your YouTube account via OBS Studio, but can simply use the Stream Key.

Finding your YouTube Stream Key

Your Stream Key is generated once you have created your YouTube account and saved it accordingly. You can find your YouTube Stream Key by visiting the YouTube website with a browser and starting a livestream. 

Here is a brief step-by-step guide, with more details like where your YouTube Stream Key is hidden.

  1. Visit youtube.com with an internet browser and log in with your account.
  1. In the top right corner, click on the camera icon with the plus sign in the middle and then select “Start Livestream”.
  1. Now you can decide whether you want to schedule your livestream or start it immediately.
  1. In the next step, select the option “Streaming software” and click on “OK”.
  1. In the overview that now appears, you will find your YouTube stream key directly under “Stream settings”.
  1. To copy it, simply click on “Copy” and insert your YouTube stream key into OBS Studio/Wave.video/Wirecast or a similar video recording and Live streaming software

In order for your streaming tool to know which account to start the stream from, you need to insert and save your YouTube stream key once. The stream key is static and does not change unless you regenerate it on YouTube. Therefore, you only need to make this setting once. So once you have inserted the stream key in any of the above mentioned softwares, both interfaces are connected and work hand in hand.

In case you are using OBS Studio-

After you have copied your stream key, open OBS Studio on your computer. Now open the Settings menu and click on “Stream”. In the drop-down menu under “Platform”, select YouTube – RTMPS. Paste your Stream Key below and close the menu by clicking “Okay”.

It contains all the information about your YouTube account and can be used by anyone PC in the world to start a live stream from your YouTube account. Therefore, you should never give it to anyone else or otherwise share it negligently.
